The audition process will be similar to last year in small groups. Auditions will take place in the PAC this year. When you get there, hopefully we will have a table outside of the PAC that you will check in at. You will receive a name tag & number, have your picture taken and make sure you have your audition form filled out completely. You can download a form and fill it out at home or we will have some at auditions to fill out there. Please make sure you email is legible, as that is how we share information throughout the rehearsal process. Second, please make sure all your conflicts are listed, better be safe than sorry. Failure to report all conflicts could result in losing your role or Varsity Letter. For example: sports practice & games, church events, vacations ect. Be honest! Conflicts greatly affect the rehearsal calendar and casting. We will call in small groups and lead the group through vocal warm ups, we will test your vocal range, there are some roles that will depend on that when casting. Next, you will sing your audition song you’ve prepared. Still looking? No worries KC posted a few on the info & calendar page, below the music pic. You may get all the way through the 16 measures, you may be stopped early, or you may be asked to sing more, it just depends on what we need to hear. Some may be asked to sing their selection again. During the music part we are looking/listening for yes: pitch & tone are important for leads & supporting roles. For all roles we are looking for character choices are you telling your story through your actions & your facial expressions? This is a fairytale the bigger the actions & facial expressions the better. If you don’t get called into sing right away you will either be asked to wait or be called into the cafeteria to learn a dance. Once the group has learned the dance, Rachel will join Robin for a quick "performance". There are some roles that dancing is important, but again in all roles we are looking for fun character choices, make them big and have fun! Once you have completed both tasks you are free to go. If time allows we may have a few people read scenes from the script. The call back list will be posted on the cast web page by Saturday, September 7th, by @ 10 pm. Emails will be sent out with any information or music you will need for callbacks. Callbacks will be held on Monday, Septmeber 9th from 4:30 pm-8:00 pm (look for a blog post coming up soon about this!). **When casting we look at who fits the role physically, vocally, character wise and sometimes dance wise best. If the students are equal and on the same level of talent we will choose the upperclassman. Remember we are building a team and want out best players out front. We try to find a part that fits everyone best.** Ya’ll auditions are right around the corner we can’t wait to see you there!

Leading RolesShrek (m)- must be a strong singer and character. He does have a Scottish accent. Shrek is literally like an onion. :) He has to be able to express many different “layers” of emotion that are peeled away during the show. Shrek is very quick witted and independent, clever, disgusting, and proud of it. Fiona (f)- a triple threat, not only a strong singer and character, but has a tap number. Fiona is literally crazy, she has has no human interaction for 23 years while she has been locked in her tower with her books. She doesn’t know how to deal with other human life forms appropriately and that’s what makes her so lovable, she’s not the typical princess. Fiona’s lack of social skills leads her to be a very funny character. She struggles with her identity, and is hesitant to truly let others in, keeping some powerful secrets that she has trouble sharing with others. Donkey (either)- the lovable stead, a strong character. Donkey is the entertaining, comedic sidekick, whether Shrek likes it or not. He talks incenstinly, but has a good heart and just wants a true friend. Farquaad (m)- Strong character- Very insecure of himself and short-in-stature, the ruthless ruler of Duloc. This actor will spend the entierty of the show on his knees (don’t worry we’ll have knee pads for you). He is self-centered and vain, he has his mind is set on making things look nice, and enacting cruel statutes, intentionally designed for the suffering of many living things. Nice guy, right? Featured SoloistsIn Shrek the Musical there are many featured soloists, some will be cast after auditions, other will be cast during rehearsal. These featured soloists are: Mama & Papa Ogre (who open the show!), King Harold & Queen Lilian, Captain of the Guard, Captured Knights, Pied Piper and the tapping rats and many fairtytales!! One of the coolest pieces of this show is the role of Dragon! She has an amazing song we need an alto with a belt, it’s a powerful number. Be aware that the song on the soundtrack and in the Netflix version is not the one in our show. Another fun part of the dragon is the puppeteers, we need 3, that’s how big our puppet is!! This is one number that is exhausting for those who aren’t even sining it, but a spectacle nonetheless. Some featured soloists that will be fun to have in our show this year are young Fiona and Yonng Shrek, who may possibly be cast as baby bear. Keep spreading the news about Saturday, Sept. 7 auditions being open to kids up to age 14. Shrek the Musical is full of many roles that are fun and hold the opportunity to create a fun character to pop off the fairy tale pages. One of those groups is the Dulocs and the guards for Farquaad. The Dulocs need to be sharp in their dance & movements. The guards have many comedic moments and act as a tight group. Both groups have many numbers with Lord Farquaad. Unlike the Fairytales they have all been conformed to look a like.
Fairytales are another one of the groups, they unlike the Farquaad minions all have their own personalities and characters. We will be cast 3 after auditions: Pinocchio, Gingy & Sugar Plum Fairy. The rest will be cast during rehearsals once we are able to see who picks up the music and puts in the work to earn their solos. The characters we have to bring to life this fall are: Wolf, 3 Little Pigs (harmonies needed), White Rabbit, Humpty Dumpty, Peter Pan, Fairy Godmother, Ugly Duckling, Witch, 3 bears (Mama & Papa, Baby (played by Young Shrek), Mad Hatter, Elf and more! The Fairytales have 2 really big dance numbers (Freak Flag & Story of My Life) and need strong, individual characters. |
