We have announced our 2019 fall musical as Shrek the Musical. I would like to share some of the reasons why we chose this modern musical. So to begin Shrek the Musical has many layers....like onions, let's start. 1. The music is fun, not to mention the show is hilarious! If you haven't had chance to enjoy this show it is on Netflix! Get familiar with the show, music & characters. When I first did this show in 2015, every night I had a new favorite song, not only are they funny, but many have a great sincere message. 2. Characters! All the characters are so fun! I will be diving into character specifics in later posts, but I love the diversity of the fairy tale creatures, the craziness of a social inept princess, a spunky donkey and a short statured Lord. It will give students a chance to work on comedy within the forms of new types of characters! Shrek the Musical is chalked full of animals and many fun fairy tale creatures. This will give the students a chance to create different types of characters from years past. Fairy tale and animal creatures don't follow the rules of human characters, you can push the borders so much further! Plus, this show gives lots opportunities to highlight many students in speaking, dancing, and singing roles. 3. Physicality! Shrek the Musical has some new physical tasks to overcome and learn from: a giant puppet, that takes 3 different puppeteers and not to mention an actor on his knees, growing noses and fat suits. 4. Tap! Yup, this is the third year in a row we will have another tap number in the musical. Each year I know the experience grows, along with the knowledge base. Bring on the tapping rats! 5. Audience appropriate age level- this fairy tale with a modern feel will entertain young kids up to the adults. With the familiarity and fun characters, the humor and the story of our favorite green ogre. 6. Great message or should I say many messages! Woven into this hilarious musical are many great messages that can strike a chord with anyone. The most obvious moral of the story is to not judge others solely by appearances, everyone has something special about themselves and to share with others and to accept and include them as they are. A secondary message is the importance of companionship: everybody needs friends, and they may come to you in many different, unexpected ways. Shrek the Musical shares the lessons of self-acceptance, inner-beauty, and inclusion & friendship, today's media centered, isolated world. With that said we only have 233 days to let our Freak Flag Fly!
