Well we are at 165 days until auditions! We are looking forward to this new journey! The thing we love about Shrek the Musical is the huge variety and number of parts we will be looking to fill. As you head into spring think about ways that you can improve, vocal? Character consistency? Dance? Shrek has strong characters, who need strong character choices vocally and physically, do some research. There is also tap dancing again, small chorus and Fiona. Here are a few more tips to take in. 1. Confidence-It sounds simple but it takes practice. Walk in the door with your held head high. Be wary of shuffling feet and eye contact. If you’re nervous, not feeling well, or having a bad day. Leave it outside the door. Your body language shares a lot, even when you are standing to the side waiting, arms crossed presents an attitude or boredom And don’t forget to smile—that’s the lasting impression you want to leave.
2. Personality- Let it shine through. Don’t give one-word answers when having a conversation with the casting director. Ask questions! We are looking for students who will be self advocates when they need clarification. 3. Connection- Memorize your music or be familiar enough with it to maintain eye contact. If you get a chance to read a scene or lines, knowing the dialogue is important, but making a connection with the other reader is what will make the scene natural and believable 4. Character- Know the characters. Read the script beforehand to pick-up as many clues as possible or watch the show on Netflix. Don't just be prepared for the character you want. 5. Emotions- Yelling isn’t the only way to show hatred or anger. Sometimes being quiet as you make your point is a powerful display of emotion. Playing opposites is a much more interesting choice than the obvious. 6. Act- Acting means to do, not to talk. Find your actions and play them! The biggest thing we look for in dance and scenes is what you do with the material you are given. How do you react to others around you and play off of them? 7. Strengths- know your strengths. Pick music that best shows off your voice, range, emotions. If you feel acting is your strength pick a song that shows that. Callbacks- this is a time that we need to see something more or see you again for something. If you don't get a callback that does not mean you are not cast. You may have read something perfectly and you fit the profile of exactly what we are looking for! If you do get a callback it is imperative to look over the music that is sent to you and become familiar with it. This shows a huge amount of initiative and willingness to work. Go over the dance again, we may ask you to dance the number again, and in smaller groups.
